CAMPAIGN TO NEUTER STRAY ANIMALS For those of you wondering where I was last week, an update for you. The neutering campaign lasted for a week at my home, so I was unable to do much else, other than assist with the cats. I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped during the campaign. It was a great success and 57 males and 101 females were neutered making a final total of 158 cats and breaking our previous record. This could not have been achieved without the support everyone gave and I thank you all, once again, for everything. Hopefully, this might mean there are fewer kittens born next spring, needing homes. As of last night I have 4 more waiting to be done that we caught yesterday from an unfinished colony. So that will make a grand total of 162. I have misplaced a couple of cat boxes so if you have one that does not belong to you, please could you return it. Thank you.
PLEASE sterilise your animal and if you don’t have one, persuade someone else to sterilise their animal. Make the pledge in 2007 to sterilise at least one animal. Remember prices vary and the cost of a cat sterilisation is anything between 50 Euros and 150 Euros. Not many people can afford that and so they depend on campaigns like ours, donations from people like you, or the local charity shops to help them. Donate your unwanted items to the charity shops, offer monetary support if you can, trap a cat and get it to a vet if you are able to. Every little thing helps to solve the big picture problems. Thanks again to everyone Michele The Hope Fund.
IMPORTANT NOTICEPlease remember that it is now law to have your pet micro-chipped. You should be abiding by the law and ensuring that this simple procedure is carried out. One day it might save your animal’s life. It is not very expensive and will save a fine later on. It will also help the people who rescue animals on a daily basis to find owners quickly. During the past few weeks at least 5 or 6 dogs have been found and sent to the dog pound in Lagos with microchips. However, the owner could NOT be traced because the animal was not listed on the central register in Lisbon! INSIST that your microchip papers are sent to the central register IMMEDIATELY because if they are not, you may as well not bother to microchip your animal. No-one will know who the dog belongs to unless by chance the dog is found in the area where he was chipped and therefore he may be on a local register. The next one we find could be yours.
DATE FOR YOUR DIARY!Don’t forget every third Sunday of the month is CAR BOOT SUNDAY. Held in the car park of Restaurante “Quinta dos Areoes” in Espiche and adjacent to the veterinary clinic. Stallholders pay 3 Euros and should arrive early. The sale usually runs from 8.30am until about 1pm. There is plenty of space for parking, a good atmosphere and a restaurant on site for tea and coffee. Bathroom also available! Please call or e-mail Michele for more details on: 919 457 263 or Happyhounds@mail.telepac.pt
During the first few weeks of 2007, myself and several other friends have removed at least 16 animals from the municipal dog pound in Lagos in an attempt to rescue and rehome some of them to new loving homes. One old German Shepherd had been there for two years, forgotten after a Christmas break…. A mother and 6 puppies have also been rescued, plus several other puppies. We now need to home these dogs and you can find them on the ANIMALS In Need Page. Please consider one of them before you go out and buy a dog. They deserve a second chance. If we are able to rehome the ones we have now, we can continue to remove others from there and keep the dog pound empty!
Feline Aids is not to be confused with the human strain. It is a highly contagious disease for cats that is easily transmitted via fighting and sexual intercourse. This is why it is so important that your cat is neutered. |
